Nigerian writer-director CJ “Fiery” Obasi has achieved a significant milestone in Nigerian cinema with his feature film “Mami Wata” becoming the first film by a Nigeria-based filmmaker to premiere at the prestigious Sundance Film Festival back in 2022. The film made its debut in January as part of the World Cinema Dramatic competition section, securing a coveted spot at one of the biggest film festivals in the world.
At Sundance, “Mami Wata” garnered praise from both the jury and audiences, leaving a lasting impression. The film was honored with the special jury award for cinematography, recognizing the remarkable work of Brazilian DOP Lílis Soares. It has also gained recognition as one of the most internationally acclaimed Nigerian feature films in recent history, earning coveted slots at prestigious festivals and film events worldwide.
“Mami Wata” is an expressionist fable presented in black and white. Obasi’s film explores the timeless themes of good versus evil and the importance of maintaining balance during times of societal change. Set entirely in Benin, West Africa, the story revolves around a fictional village called Iyi, which faces turmoil and division following the illness and death of a young boy.
The community holds the water goddess Mami Wata responsible for not intervening and protecting Iyi. This places Mama Efe, the village’s religious intermediary, and her daughters Prisca and Zinwe in a perilous situation. Interestingly, after its global journey, “Mami Wata” is finally returning home to Nigeria. The much-traveled West African folktale is set to grace Nigerian cinemas in the coming months, marking the culmination of a seven-year journey that breathed life into this captivating folklore.
Anticipation is high for this celebrated West African folktale, making it one of the most eagerly awaited Nigerian films of recent times. Obasi took to Twitter on Thursday, July 13, 2023, to announce the local premiere date, stating, “The only way to experience it… MAMI WATA in cinemas across Nigeria September 8.”
Produced by Oge Obasi and edited by Nathan Delannoy, the film features a talented cast including Rita Edochie, Uzoamaka Aniunoh, Evelyne Ily Juhen, Kelechi Udegbe, and Tough Bone.
As the release date approaches, Nigerian audiences are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to witness the magic of “Mami Wata” on the big screen. This groundbreaking achievement by CJ “Fiery” Obasi paves the way for Nigerian filmmakers to showcase their exceptional talent and storytelling on the international stage, propelling Nigerian cinema to new heights and garnering global recognition for its rich and diverse narratives.
