Aspire to maguire in the mud. Amara(Jenifer Obodo), a burn survivor who has always found solace in Ms Brown’s mental health podcast learns that sometimes people preach one thing online and do the opposite of what they preach in real life.
On the day she meets Ms Brown((Jaiye Kuti), in person, she experienced an hostility that would have been less surprising had it not come from someone who claims online to understand the struggle of people who experience rejection and have a low self esteem.
Amara was so disappointed that when she finds a love interest, she is not confident enough to show her face without covering her scars with layers of makeup.
Fortunately when her love interest finds out about the scars, he accepts her and goes on with plans to marry her until time comes to meet each other’s parents and Jason’s mother turns out to be Ms Brown, the obnoxious podcaster who was rude to Amara because of her scars.
It’s a no -brainer that the last thing Jason’s mother is giving that union is her blessing but as more details come to light and it is apparent that Ms Brown has more to do with Amara’s scars than we initially thought, the offended becomes the one pliéing for mercy.
A mighty part of the relevance of this film is because of the awareness it creates about discrimination and it almost lost even that due to a slacking production.
Scarred is rife with the regular icks; extraneous scenes and theatrics🙄.
The subplot involving the ex-girlfriend and Ms. Brown’s assistant discussing Jason post-breakup seems disconnected, contributing little to the storyline. Jason’s elaborate explanation about hiding his mother’s cigarettes also feels somewhat excessive.
These and more contribute to the slow and painful demise of the film’s relevance and earns it a 5/10 at Xplore Nollywood,
Scarred, produced by Jaiye Kuti and firstly premiered in 2022 has now arrived on Prime Video.
