Now that Cake is available on Amazon Prime, you should give it a watch and tell us what you think about it.
The film, produced by Natives Filmworks and Michelangelo Productions takes us on a journey at Cakey Bakey, where most of the scenes were shot except for a few exceptions. From delicious snacks to mouth-watering cakes, the movie entices the viewers to crave a visit to the nearest pastry shop.
Yet, despite its visual appeal, cake falls short as a culinary film. The main character, Tomiwa, portrayed by Tedela, lacks the essential baking chemistry seen in Hollywood films such as Burnt, Little Italy, and No Reservations. The title will make you think about baking and the whole culinary experience, the movie instead prioritises unrequited love stories.
The love triangle unfolds between Tomiwa, the engaged Charlya, and Tomiwa’s loyal employee, Mfon, portrayed by Folu Storms. Despite Mfon’s unwavering support, Tomiwa still didn’t see her as someone he could date.
Tope Tedela in his interviews back in 2022 shared he underwent baking classes for the role, yet he struggles to bring authenticity to his character. I feel it’s because of a conflict between the screenplay, written by Ronke Gbede, and the relationship between Tomiwa—his character and baking. Folu Storms did a better job at her role as a baker and her character as Mfon.
Despite its flaws, the movie offers a few moments of genuine humour.
While Cake attempts to present food as a catalyst for genuine affection, it fails in its plot, unlikable protagonist, and underdeveloped love interest.
Although Cake is a decent watch, the rom-com has no romantic tension and build up. Don’t set your bar too high for this.
