Did you check out Amazon Prime and notice that Role Play is trending in the top 10 spots this week? Are you unsure about watching it? Well, the answer is yes! It’s a gripping romcom suitable for solo viewing or with loved ones.
As I began watching and when Emma (Kaley Cuoco) received a secret phone call, my mind immediately drew parallels to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but with kids. However, a few scenes into the movie, I found myself hooked.
Bob Kellerman, played by Bill Nighy, is an interesting character that kept me glued to my screen at exactly the third scene.
Spoiler alert! incoming…..
In Role Play, Emma (Kaley Cuoco) leads a double life. On one hand, she’s a loving wife and mother, while she secretly works as an assassin. Her frequent business trips strain her relationship with her family. This leads to forgotten anniversaries and attempts to reconnect. When she and her husband Dave (David Oyelowo) try to spice up their lives with a role play scenario, it inadvertently collides with Emma’s secret life, sending them both into an uneventful situation.
To me, I didn’t get those hot Mr. and Mrs. Smith romantic vibes from the couples, and while they might look good on screen, they do not give those couples vibes. The plot, written by Seth W. Owens, has an emotional foundation, but Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo are better off as platonic friends. The scene where they were making out in the hotel as a couple feels so forced and awkward.
While the movie is titled Role Play, I didn’t even have a feel for it. The whole role play was only in one scene, and I wonder why. There is so much potential and ways the story could have gone.
Oyelowo’s performance provides some humor, and they did well to give life to the movie. As a great actor he is, he sure served!
Role play struggles with feeble fight scenes, minimal laughs, and a lack of emotional investment.
