Diverse Storytelling
One of the notable trends in 2023 was the diversification of storytelling in Nigerian cinema. Filmmakers explored a wide range of genres, moving beyond the traditional romance and drama that Nollywood is known for. Fantasy, horror, and historical epics found their place on the big screen, challenging stereotypes and expanding the industry’s creative boundaries.
This shift was evident in films such as like “Mikolo, Love in Pandemic, both fantasy, technology fiction adventure, and “Jagun Jagun, Orisa and Oba Elesin” all historical/epic dramas that explored Nigerian history. These films not only entertained but also showcased the versatility of Nigerian filmmakers in crafting narratives that appeal to a global audience.

Filmmakers embraced high-quality equipment and cutting-edge techniques to enhance the visual appeal of their productions. The use of drones, 6k depth defining cameras, green screens, virtual reality, and advanced post-production technologies elevated the overall cinematic experience, making Nigerian films more competitive on the international stage.
This trend was exemplified by movies like Breath of Life, Over the Bridge, Blood Vessel, Ijogbon, Jagun Jagun, The House of Secrets, Scanty Town and Sunday Affair all employed state-of-the-art visual effects to create stunning immersive worlds, setting a new standard for the industry.
Digital Distribution and Streaming Platforms
The rise of digital distribution and streaming platforms continued to reshape the distribution landscape in 2023. Nigerian filmmakers embraced these platforms, reaching a broader audience both within and outside the country. This shift allowed for greater accessibility and convenience, enabling viewers to enjoy Nollywood films at their own pace and on various devices.
Major streaming services, Netflix, Prime and Showmax, let’s not forget YouTube, invested in Nollywood content, further boosting the industry’s global visibility. This trend not only increased the revenue streams for filmmakers but also facilitated the exchange of cultural narratives on a global scale.

Nollywood has always been a powerful tool for social commentary, and in 2023, filmmakers took this responsibility to new heights by addressing pressing social issues. Movies like Gangs of Lagos, Scanty Town, Jagun Jagun, Sista, Dark October, Madam Koi koi, She Who Must be Obeyed, and the list goes on, delved into topics such as gender equality, mental health, and societal norms, sparking conversations and contributing to important societal discourse.
