Nigeria has officially chosen ‘Mami Wata’ as its International Feature Film (IFF) contender for the 96th Academy Awards, according to an announcement made by the Nigeria Oscars Official Committee (NOSC). This decision showcases the country’s commitment to celebrating and promoting its vibrant film industry.
Directed and written by C.J. Obasi, ‘Mami Wata’ is a reimagining of the mythology surrounding a mermaid deity of the same name from West African folklore. The film not only delves into folklore but also champions the significance of womanhood, making it a relevant and impactful choice.
The NOSC selected ‘Mami Wata’ for several compelling reasons. The film explores the pivotal role of women across different generations in shaping society’s well-being. Furthermore, it employs a unique approach to narrating the stories of pre and post-colonial African societies. Its technical excellence and the thematic depth of the narrative were also significant factors in its selection.
The voting committee of the NOSC, which comprises influential figures from the Nigerian film industry, made this decision. Their involvement reflects the commitment to representing Nigeria at the Oscars.
Stephanie Linus, Chairperson of the NOSC, expressed her enthusiasm for ‘Mami Wata,’ noting that it is the committee’s first submission in Pidgin English to the Oscars. She encouraged Nigerian filmmakers to continually elevate their skills and production quality to meet global standards.
‘Mami Wata’ is set in a beach-side community and explores a significant shift in their beliefs when a stranger arrives, challenging the community’s existing harmony. The film was shot on location in the Republic of Benin and has already gained recognition, winning the Special Jury Award for its captivating black-and-white cinematography at the Sundance Film Festival in 2023.
The nomination results will be released on March 10, 2024. Don’t miss any updates, stay informed with Xplorenollywood.
