Nollywood actress and producer, Toyin Abraham, has recently spoken out regarding the negative reviews her movie, ‘Ijakumo,’ has received on social media platforms. In a series of tweets, Abraham expressed her belief that the backlash is primarily driven by political opposition rather than genuine critiques of the film.
The movie, which premiered in December 2022 and was recently released on Netflix, has sparked mixed reactions among viewers.
Responding to the negative comments, Abraham voiced her opinion that many of the individuals criticizing the movie are those who opposed her political choice during the 2023 Presidential election, though she did not mention any specific party.
She took to Twitter, challenging the critics and their perceived double standards. Abraham suggested that the opposition was creating a WhatsApp group solely to disparage ‘Ijakumo’ and questioned why her support for a particular candidate should be deemed a crime while others’ choices were not subjected to the same scrutiny.
Abraham further emphasized the acceptance and success of ‘Ijakumo’ in both Nigerian and international cinemas. She highlighted its screenings in the USA and Odeon cinemas, running parallel to its Nigerian release.
The actress expressed her intention to speak out when it comes to her work, despite potentially remaining silent on other matters. Abraham’s statements implied that she believes the negative reviews may be driven by an agenda rather than genuine assessment of the movie’s quality.
Subsequently, Abraham apologized for her initial outburst and urged critics to share their opinions about the film with love. Recognizing the support of those who appreciate her work, she requested understanding and emphasized her humanity.
‘Ijakumo,’ directed by Adebayo Tijani, tells the story of a spiritualist named Asabi, who seeks revenge against a former lover turned pastor. Asabi enlists the help of a stripper to ensnare the cleric in a trap.
