Bimbo Ademoye, the 2023 AMVCA winner of best actress in a comedy/TV series, recently opened up about the harsh realities of the Nigerian film industry, shedding light on the exploitation faced by many actresses. However, she stood firm in her values and refused to succumb to such pressures.
Unlike many aspiring actresses who enter the industry and are confronted with the disturbing proposition of exchanging sexual favors for opportunities, Ademoye was fortunate to have a positive start to her career. She attributed her early success to the guidance and support she received from a senior colleague, Uduak Isong.
Acknowledging the invaluable role Isong played in her journey, Ademoye expressed her gratitude. Isong acted as a mentor and mother figure, offering her guidance and helping her establish herself in the Nigerian film industry. With Isong’s support, Ademoye never had to resort to compromising her principles for the sake of her career.
When asked about the pressures she faced, Ademoye emphasized the constant objectification she encountered. Producers often wanted her to portray characters like the seductive secretary, the woman who stole someone’s husband, or the one who snatched another person’s boyfriend. However, she remained steadfast in her refusal to be pigeonholed into such roles.
Ademoye’s experiences have given her a unique perspective, and she now advises aspiring young women who wish to join Nollywood to prioritize self-care and never compromise their values. She firmly believes that success in the industry should be based on talent, hard work, and determination rather than engaging in exploitative practices.
“To be completely honest, everyone wanted to exploit my physical appearance,” Ademoye revealed. “They wanted me to portray the seductive secretary, the woman who stole someone’s husband, or the one who snatched another person’s boyfriend. Fortunately, I can say that I have been incredibly fortunate.”
Reflecting on her entry into the industry, Ademoye emphasized the importance of having a mentor like Uduak Isong. She explained, “I never encountered the challenges of trading sexual favors with producers for roles, and I have never engaged in such activities. She acted as more of a mother figure to me during my early days.”
Bimbo Ademoye’s story serves as an inspiration and a testament to the strength and resilience required to navigate the entertainment industry.
