A recent report by FilmOne, a prominent entertainment company, has shed light on the reigning supremacy of Nollywood films in cinemas across Anglophone West African countries since 2019. Unveiled as the ‘Nigeria Box Office Year Book 2022,’ the report extensively examined the distribution proportions of Nollywood and Hollywood movies in the region’s cinemas from 2016 to 2022.

Data extracted from the report reveals the commanding presence of Nollywood in 2019, where it captured a substantial 62 percent share of movies showcased in Anglophone West African cinemas, leaving Hollywood with a modest 38 percent. Even amid the formidable challenges of 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic gripped the world, Nollywood impressively maintained its prominence with 50 percent of movies in cinemas, while Hollywood trailed with 37 percent.

A deeper analysis of the report substantiates the consistent trend witnessed in 2021, as Nollywood proudly maintained its dominance at 57 percent, leaving Hollywood with a comparatively lower share of 43 percent. The subsequent year of 2022 witnessed a surge in Nollywood’s influence, as it commanded an overwhelming 68 percent of movies screened across the region’s cinemas, leaving Hollywood with a meager 32 percent foothold.

This remarkable revelation marks the fifth edition of the ‘Nigeria Box Office Year Book,’ an eagerly anticipated annual release by FilmOne. Ladun Awobokun, the esteemed editor-in-chief of this year’s publication, expressed her unwavering excitement regarding the report’s invaluable insights, stressing its utmost significance in capturing the industry’s current trends and projecting its growth trajectory within the region.

Awobokun took to LinkedIn to share her reflections, stating, “Following our customary meticulousness, we have meticulously compiled a comprehensive array of activities, performances, box office insights, and critical perspectives from esteemed stakeholders within the Nigerian film industry. Our aim is to proudly showcase the awe-inspiring growth of the industry despite the adversity brought forth by the pandemic, while simultaneously accentuating the vast potential that lies within the film industry of Anglophone West Africa and sub-Saharan Africa in the years to come.”

The publication not only encompasses invaluable industry insights but also offers a wealth of Q1 2023 performance data and comprehensive full-year box office predictions grounded in well-researched market indicators. Additionally, it incorporates a segment featuring a sample research on consumers’ perspectives, meticulously gathered from various states across Nigeria. The report also pays homage to the highest-grossing actors, directors, editors, DOPs (Director of Photography), and screenwriters who have made indelible contributions to the industry in the year 2022.

The report’s profound insights have reverberated across the film community, with Chinaza Onuzo, co-founder at Inkblot productions, eagerly sharing some of its significant findings on his Twitter page, effectively sparking engaging discussions and piquing widespread interest.

FilmOne’s report undeniably underscores the extraordinary growth and influence of Nollywood within the cinematic landscape of Anglophone West Africa. Despite the formidable hurdles posed by the pandemic, the Nigerian film industry has exhibited commendable resilience and is poised for exponential future growth. As avid readers and industry stakeholders delve into the captivating pages of the ‘Nigeria Box Office Year Book 2022,’ they will undoubtedly gain a comprehensive understanding of the industry’s current state and be enlightened by the boundless opportunities that lie on the horizon.
