Film critics, the discerning guardians of cinematic analysis, serve as conduits between the creators’ vision and the audience’s experience. Their reviews, carefully crafted and thoughtfully articulated, delve into the intricacies of storytelling, plot development, cinematography, acting, and overall craftsmanship, unravelling the layers that contribute to a film’s impact.
With the increasing need for content, content creators, filmmakers and streaming platforms, churning out productions daily, film critics will come in handy to guide you on what to watch and what to avoid in the new year.
Critics come under fire a lot and those of us that focus on film are no exception, especially from fans who feel very passionate about productions from their favourite’s acts. While critics can be subjective (I know I can be) here is a guide as well as a basic understanding of what some of us (Critics) mean when we review tv series or movie productions.
- Storytelling:
At the heart of every cinematic experience lies the art of storytelling. As a critic, I look at the narrative arc, examining how the story unfolds and engages the audience. I typically evaluate the coherence of the plot, the development of characters, and the effectiveness of dialogue. A compelling story, is one that not only captivates but also resonates, leaving a lasting impression on the viewer. So, when I say the story doesn’t add up, just know – I wasn’t moved (not compelling enough), didn’t tick my box and wasn’t impressive. Some of the stories I have enjoyed – The Notebook, Breath of Life, Blood Vessel, Black Mirror (Earlier Seasons), The Witcher, The Boys, I can go on!
- Plot Development:
Film critics navigate the twists and turns of a plot, assessing its pacing, structure, and originality. They consider how well a film builds tension, resolves conflicts, and delivers a satisfying conclusion. Sometimes, I merge story and plot, especially as we are managing reading time (reviews shouldn’t be too long). However, a well-crafted plot is one that keeps the audience on the edge of their seats while delivering meaningful resolutions that align with the overarching themes. When movies take their time to get to the point “She Who Must be Obeyed” is an example, it loses people and interest in what the production is trying to portray. Some of the plots that blew my mind in 2023 – “House of Usher”, Breaking Bad, Missing, Black Mirror, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, Queen Charlotte, The Trade.
- Cinematography:
The visual language of the film is a cornerstone of film criticism. I dissect the cinematography to evaluate the composition, lighting, and camera movements. For me the visually stunning productions also blow my mind and while Hollywood has some productions that burst my brain, Bollywood is also doing great. I explore how these elements work together and contribute to the film’s atmosphere, mood, and overall visual appeal. A visually striking film seamlessly integrates cinematography to enhance the narrative and evoke emotional responses. Some of the movies that made me smitten – Avatar, Lord of the Rings, Interstellar, Avengers – End Game, Black Panther; Wakanda Forever, Breath of Life, Black Book, October 1, and Blood Vessel.
- Acting:
The performances of the cast are a focal point for film critics, cause while a production might plot, story and cinematography in check, once acting is bad, the whole production would probably stink. A stellar performance, transcends the script, bringing characters to life and adding layers of complexity to the storytelling. When reviewing movies, I examine the chemistry among the cast, the believability of character portrayals, and the ability of actors to connect with the audience. In our industry, it can be tough to find acts that, irrespective of the production still deliver, however there are some whole have hit the mark and still continue to deliver to their respective roles. Some of my top acts – Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Richard Mofe Damijo, Ramsey Nouah, Gabriel Afolayan, Kehinde Bankole, Rita Dominic, Kate Henshaw, and Wole Ojo.
- Overall Craftsmanship:
At the end, we engage in a holistic assessment of a film’s craftsmanship, considering the synergy of various elements. This usual includes evaluating the director’s vision, the coherence of the screenplay, the integration of sound and music, and the attention to detail in production design. The overall craftsmanship of a film reflects the dedication to creativity and the art form and the commitment to delivering a cohesive and impactful cinematic experience.
Film critics wield significant influence in the industry, although as I said in Nigeria, they often come under fire for not aligning with popular opinions. In saner climes, their reviews can shape public opinion, impact box office performance, and even influence the trajectory of filmmakers’ careers. Constructive criticism serves as a catalyst for growth, prompting filmmakers to refine their craft and contribute to the evolution of cinematic storytelling.
It is essential to point out and acknowledge that film criticism is inherently subjective. As we bring our unique perspectives, tastes, and biases to the reviews. However, the best critics are the ones who strive for objectivity, recognizing that their evaluations should consider the film within its intended context and audience.
Film Critics serve as interpreters and evaluators, offering audiences a nuanced understanding of the storytelling, plot, cinematography, acting, and overall craftsmanship that constitute a film. As you engage with the reviews on XploreNollywood, we embark on a journey that transcends personal preferences, fostering a deeper appreciation for the artistry, complexity and business that define the world of cinema.
