To commemorate International Women’s Month and celebrate the spirit of resilience and empowerment, The Macallan unveiled its cinematic masterpiece, “The Spirit of 1926,” an inspired biopic of Janet Isabella Harbinson, the former Managing Director of The Macallan at the luxury prestige business lounge, Capital Club’s annual African Women on Board (AWB) roundtable in Victoria Island, Lagos, Nigeria on March 14, 2024.

The eight-minute biopic, starring the acclaimed actress Emily Mortimer as Harbinson, offers a glimpse into Janet Harbinson, also known as Nettie’s journey, as the Managing Director of The Macallan during the aftermath of World War I.

Directed by filmmaker Mike Newell and penned by award-winning screenwriter Allan Shiach, the movie is a testament to her unwavering dedication and resilience, showcasing her heroic impact on the whisky industry. As the film premiered at the Women’s Month event in Lagos, attendees were moved by Nettie’s story of courage and conviction.

Speaking of the biopic, Daniel Atteh, Brand Ambassador and Educator, Edrington Portfolio Lagos, commented, “As we showcase ‘Nettie’ in honour of Women’s Month, we raise a toast to the resilient spirit of Janet Isabella Harbinson. Her dedication serves as a poignant reminder of the quiet heroism that shapes history and the indelible impact of women in leadership. The Macallan resonates deeply, with the pivotal role of women in shaping our collective narrative of success and empowerment.”

In celebrating her legacy during International Women’s Month, The Macallan reaffirms its commitment to celebrating unsung heroes and championing women’s empowerment. As attendees raised a glass to Nettie’s memory, they honoured a pioneer whose spirit continues to inspire generations.
