Now that Orisa is available on Prime, you might want to watch the Yoruba epic directed by yours truly, Odunlade Adekola.
The movie was originally released at the cinema on July 23rd, 2023 and surprisingly did better than Barbie and Oppenheimer in the Nigerian box office. This fact made me wonder if it was all worth it or if it was just hype!
Orisa is another thrilling journey into epic mythical heroes and ancient conflicts.
The film’s plot shares epic themes and visual elements, along with distinctive character motivations and tragic undertones.
The narrative unfolds in a kingdom thrown into chaos as the revered Kabiyesi descends into madness. This leaves the once peaceful land vulnerable to the terrorising bandit, Komokomo, played by Femi Adebayo. The fast-paced action unfolds in a chaotic manner. While watching, I felt a lot was done, but nothing did justice to the plot. Initially expecting an epic movie with incantations and thrills, it turned out to be about a mad king—I was bored to my bones.
Orisa features an ensemble cast, including Odunlade Adekola, Femi Adebayo, Muyiwa Ademola, Shaffy Bello, Dele Odule, Jide Kosoko, and Eniola Ajao. The highlight is the acting prowess of the cast. Despite occasional forced rhymes and some elements that could be better incorporated, Odunlade captures an authentic indigenous vibe.
The production team excels in costume, makeup, and set design, contributing to the film’s overall appeal. While the chaotic plot and fast-paced scenes may leave some longing for a more cohesive storyline, the movie still manages to entertain.
Orisa receives a commendable 5/10, with strengths lying in the impressive performances of the cast and the dedication of the production team.
