While many of us may not yet have Halloween costumes, Jay Franklyn Jitubor and other members of his recent production have asked us to calm our horses and make sure our Netflix subscription is on lock because they are bringing us the thrill of Halloween through their film, The Origin: Madam Koi Koi.
The famed director followed the news of this release, presently dubbed “Nollywood’s biggest horror movie,” with a trailer and revealed that the film will be released soon.
Madam Koi Koi’s story in Nigeria is about a stylish teacher known for her beauty and her red heels. Whenever she walked in the hallways, her shoes would make the “koi koi” sound, hence the name Madam Koi Koi.
It was also said that she would be cruel to students, and it was one such occasion that led to her boss firing her, which annoyed her. Unfortunately, on her way home after vacating the school quarters, she got into an accident that claimed her life.
She became outraged at the people she believed were responsible for her downfall—the girl she slapped that got her fired and the legions of students who were tired of her hostility.
She was said to only come out at night, trying to hide her badly damaged face, terrorizing the students just as she did in her lifetime, or maybe even worse.
Madam Koi Koi is mainly known for haunting school premises with activities ranging from opening school doors, singing, whistling, attacking people in toilets or the bathroom, or slapping students. Her presence is always accompanied by her footsteps. She may also be invisible, save for her heel. According to some accounts, she frequently disturbs students at night by demanding her heel, which is claimed to be missing.
In essence, Madam Koi Koi was the stuff of nightmares for many Nigerian secondary school students, particularly those in boarding schools.
Is Madam Koi Koi a fiction created to keep pupils in when the lights go out? Is this a real thing? I believe we will all find out from this film that it puts a face to what many have only heard of as legends and delves into the history of one of Nigeria’s oldest folklores.
The cast of The Origin: Madam Koi Koi includes Deyemi Okanlawon, Ireti Doyle, Jude Chukwuka, Omowunmi Dada, Iremide Adeoye, Baaj Adebule, Chioma Akpotha, and many more great acts.
The Origin: Madam Koi Koi, written by Jay Franklyn and Dale Falola, will premiere on Netflix on October 31st, 2023, just in time for Halloween.
