Africa’s first AI Film Festival lit up Lagos on September 13, 2025, proving that the continent is not just participating in the global film conversation — it is reshaping it.

Hosted at Alliance Française Lagos, the Naija AI Film Festival (NAIFF) welcomed the African film community to three dynamic gatherings: Code of Creation, Tools, Talent & Tech, and the much-anticipated Award Gala Night.

With 490 submissions from 83 countries, the festival confirmed what many already know — African filmmakers are not waiting for permission. They’re setting the global agenda for AI-driven storytelling.

At Code of Creation, filmmakers experimented with traditional sounds, running them through advanced software to see how heritage could dance with machine learning. Tools, Talent & Tech opened the floor to African innovators and global collaborators, sparking conversations that ranged from technical breakthroughs to cultural preservation.

The questions raised were profound: How do you teach a machine the rhythm of African oral tradition? What happens when AI learns from family archives instead of Hollywood datasets?

The energy carried into the Gala Night, where Dr. Toyosi Akerele-Ogunsiji delivered a stirring keynote. Her message was unmistakable: AI should be a tool of freedom, not replacement. She urged filmmakers to ensure that African languages, histories, and traditions guide the next era of film.

The festival’s founder, Obinna Okerekeocha, NAIFF’s Chief Promptasian, underscored the need for African filmmakers to treat AI as a creative playground. His quiet determination turned a daring idea into a reality — a space where African creators could publicly experiment, on their own terms.

Every session revealed a larger truth: Africa is not merely adapting AI tools. African filmmakers are reshaping them — infusing them with the layered rhythms of life on the continent, and ensuring our stories remain at the center.

The festival proved that the future of cinema isn’t just unfolding in Hollywood or Silicon Valley. It’s happening in Lagos, Accra, and across Africa — tested, refined, and led by African voices.

The success of NAIFF was powered by its hardworking team, tireless volunteers, and a vibrant community of participants who filled each hall with fresh energy. Their dedication transformed vision into reality.

And this is just the beginning. Planning is already underway for an even bigger, bolder edition in 2026, promising new collaborations, deeper experiments, and more opportunities for African cinema to lead the global AI conversation.
