Damilola Ogunsi, popularly known by his stage name ‘Gold Fish,’ is making waves in the Nigerian movie industry despite facing challenges and stereotypes due to his albinism. In a recent interview with Hip TV, Ogunsi opened up about his journey as an actor and how he refused to let his skin color define his aspirations.
The 44-year-old and ‘Gang of Lagos’actor recalled an incident where a prominent Nigerian movie director told him that being an actor was not a path for albinos. However, Ogunsi’s passion for acting began long before that encounter. He had been involved in theater since his primary school days, and his love for the craft continued through secondary school, the Polytechnic in Ibadan, and the University of Lagos.
Determined to pursue his dreams, Ogunsi left his job as a mid-level management executive in the banking sector six years ago to focus on acting. Despite facing skepticism and doubt, he believed that his dreams were not limited by his skin color. He refused to be defined solely as an “albino actor” but instead positioned himself as an actor who happened to have albinism.
Ogunsi’s journey has not been without its challenges. He has had to constantly break out of stereotypes and prove himself as a versatile actor. Rather than being pigeonholed into specific roles, he strives to showcase his talent and range as an actor. Ogunsi believes that his skin color should not be the sole focus, but rather his abilities and dedication to his craft.
Having attended film school and trained as an actor and filmmaker in New York, Ogunsi understands the unpredictable nature of the industry. He acknowledges that success as an actor is never guaranteed, regardless of talent. However, he continues to take risks and push boundaries, embracing the uncertainties that come with being in the entertainment world.
Ogunsi gained significant recognition after his role in Kunle Afolayan’s movie, ‘The Tribunal,’ in 2017. Since then, he has continued to thrive in showbiz, appearing in popular films such as ‘Mokalik’ and ‘Finding Hubby.’ His dedication and perseverance have allowed him to carve a path for himself in the Nigerian movie industry, proving that talent and passion can overcome societal limitations.
Damilola Ogunsi’s story serves as an inspiration to aspiring actors and individuals facing challenges due to societal prejudices. By refusing to let his skin color define him, Ogunsi has risen above stereotypes and pursued his dreams with unwavering determination.
