The week-long screening, which began last Friday, September 8, 2023, will conclude this Thursday, September 14, 2023.
Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters herself, ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ is already receiving acclaim for its exceptional storytelling, well-defined characters, and impeccable craftsmanship. It captivates Funmilayo’s life, from her pioneering days as the first female student at Abeokuta Grammar School to her union with Israel Ransome-Kuti.
Together with her husband, Funmilayo challenged oppression and spearheaded the formation of the Abeokuta Women’s Union. This union fought fearlessly against colonial and traditional rulers who obstructed justice and fairness.
The cast of ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ includes seasoned actors like Joke Silva, Kehinde Bankole, Ibrahim Suleiman, and Jide Kosoko, among others.
Bolanle Austen Peters shared her enthusiasm for the project, expressing her hopes for its future. “Submitting ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ for consideration by the Nigeria Official Screening Committee (NOSC) at the 96th Academy Awards next year is a humbling and exhilarating experience,” she said.
Yakubu Yahaya, an associate producer, is equally optimistic about the film’s global impact. He believes that ‘Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’ will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the global film scene.
Even though she passed away in 1978 at the age of 77, Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti’s legacy lives on.
