Genre: Drama

Year: 2022

Duration: 58m

Audio: English and yoruba

Director & Cast: Julie Ako, Belinda Yanga, Seun Ajayi, Philip Francis, Joke Muyiwa

Honestly, I’ve skipped this part many times before, but around seven (7) minutes in, I realized I should’ve watched it earlier. It’s a Nigerian-themed movie with a great atmosphere. The styles and fashion choices are fantastic, even if a bit exaggerated. But it’s clear they’re embracing Nigerian cultural traditions.

Initially, judging by the title and cover on ShowMax, I thought it was a traditional precolonial movie. However, it surprised me. The traditional chants and songs got me swaying and even doing a few bata dance moves.

I really appreciate the use of the Yoruba language and the portrayal of culture and traditions. I even learned something surprising about the Aso Eegun culture that I didn’t know before. But I won’t spill the details here—go watch it yourself.

From the get-go, Belinda Yanga’s portrayal of Toke indicated trouble. She exuded a spoiled-brat attitude, especially with her interest in Akin’s fabric, played by Seun Ajayi.

Even after Iyadu, acted by Joke Muyiwa, warned her about the clothing, you can guess what happened: she knowingly bought it from a boy named Bidemi, fully aware that it was stolen.

Toke, the famous fashion designer, caught up in self-pity and aiming to win the AFT competition, has already caused chaos in the village. The absence of the Aso Eegun spells trouble for the thief and everyone involved, directly or indirectly. It’s insane to think she’d still purchase something sacred after learning its significance.

I don’t sympathize with her when things start to unravel, but my heart goes out to Akin. She even denied everything when she saw Akin in the Masquerade dress.

This movie is only 58 minutes long, but don’t skip any parts because each scene tells its own story. The ending caught me off guard, and I still have some lingering questions.

After watching, remember to leave a review on our audience rating page.
