Nothing feels better than a well thought out script featuring amazing actors. If the story-lines keep getting better, how would we not want more. Check out seven of some of the incredible writers we’re anticipating this year:
- Shirley Frimpong-Manso
This multi award winning writer and filmmaker is best known for Rebecca, Grey Dawn, Devil in the Detail, Potomanto, and Adam’s Apple. Her new series featured on Iroko TV – Shampaign, stars Blossom Chukwujekwua and Joselyn Dumas among a host of other super talents. This year, any film from the stables of Sparrow Productions -of which she is CEO- would be a welcome delight.
- Tunde Babalola
Tunde Babalola is best known for writing TIFF premiere The CEO, Last Flight to Abuja, October 1, and Single Voices (TV Series) to name a few. In 2015, his pieces – October 1 and The Meeting won 14 awards at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards including the Best Drama Writer and the Best Comedy Writer.
- Kemi Adesoye
This award winning writer is best known for The Figurine. The film was a success at the box office and won six awards at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards. Kemi Adesoye won the Best Original Screenplay at the 2013 Nollywood Movies Awards for Phone Swap starring Nse Ikpe-Etim. She co-wrote (with Bola Agbaje) Fifty – the Nigerian romantic drama produced by Mo Abudu. She’s also a writer for TV episodes Shuga and Tinsel.
- Lani Aisida
Accredited for having two of his scripts showing at the cinemas at the same time last year, the screenwriter for the Toronto Film Festival feature – Just Not Married is also known for Gone Grey and Love, Lies and Alibi. He moved into the industry with the TV series – Plus 234 (his first ever screenplay adapted from his work experiences in the UK). Amazing pieces aren’t only expected this year, they’d be hugely appreciated.
- Pascal Amanfo
Pascal Amanfo is the multi award winning writer and filmmaker for films such as Single and Married, Matter Arising, My Last Wedding, Tight (In God’s name), Family Runs, Purple Rose and Shoot to Kill to name a few. In 2013, his film House of Gold won six awards at the Zulu African Film Academy Awards. Productions from the Pascal Amanfo Expression would be seriously anticipated this year.
- Rogers Ofime
In 2015 he won the Award of Merit at the Best Shorts Competition for One of Several. Then in 2016 he gave us Oloibiri, the box office hit that starring Richard Mofe Damijo, Joke Silva and Olu Jacobs. He’s also known for Zone 222 (TV Series), Price of Spice, and Umbara Point.
- Tunde Olaoye
This filmmaker and theater artist is the storyteller behind Jenifa’s Diary. He directed and co-wrote (with Jovi Babs) the screenplay for Married but Living Single, an award winning film starring Joseph Benjamin, Funke Akindele, and Joke Silva to name a few. The movie further peaked at the number three spot across West African cinemas.
