Marché du Film and African Cinema will be celebrating their 5 years collaboration of hosting discussions about the thriving African film industry, celebrating its diverse talent, and encouraging meaningful conversations about the continent’s cinematic achievements.
This year’s event will take place on May 18th, 2023 by 11:30 a.m. and it is titled, “High Level Conference on The African Pavilion.” This interactive and educational event is set to be held during the Marché du Film, Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 16th to May 24th, 2023.
The conference is splitted into two parts. The first phase of the conference will be held at 11:30 am and it’s themed: Show Me The Money: Africa Film Financing. It’s based on the fact that, “This year, no less than 13 African films are in competition at the Cannes Film Festival, among which, two are in the running for the Palme d’Or. However, the lack of funds stunts the growth of the African film industry. What policies and instruments can make a difference and what does the future hold for African productions?”
The speakers include Abdoul Aziz Cissé, the Permanent Secretary of the FOPICA; Moses Babatope, the Film Producer, Managing Director of FilmOne; Temwa Gondwé, the Senior Manager at Afreximbank Speaker; and Emad Eskandar, the Head of the Red Sea Fund. This first phase will be moderated by Astrid Audibert, a Cultural and Creative Industry Expert.
The second phase of the event will be continued at 12:15 p.m. and its title, “How to arm African young people with the skills and experience they need to flourish in a competitive cinema and audiovisual industry, and produce a slate of authentic African stories for the global market?” The Conference will explore impactful ways to support African Creatives.
The speakers for this phase include Moky Makura, the Executive Director of Africa No Filter (ANF): Jade Osiberu Writer, the Director and Film Producer; and Samba Bathily, the Chairman of ADS Group and philanthropist. The moderator of this phase is Ijeoma Onah, the Founder of the Nigerian International Film Summit.
